Warning signs change the priority
Scorching, cracking, unusual heat, crackling, sparks, smoke or a burning smell should not be ignored. Stop using the affected equipment. Do not touch a hot or damaged outlet, remove the faceplate or insert objects to test it. For immediate danger, leave the area and contact emergency services.
Describe rather than dismantle
Record which socket is affected, what was connected and whether nearby lights or outlets also stopped working. A photograph from a safe distance may help explain visible damage, but no photograph can prove that a circuit is safe.
Repair the cause, not only the appearance
A replacement faceplate may not resolve a circuit or connection problem. Ask what testing is needed and whether the scope includes checking the repaired circuit afterwards. Avoid extending power from another socket as a long-term workaround for a fault.
